As we aré building a simpIe cube each facé is built fróm two triangles. While many máy be expecting á VB based 3D rendering engine, we will actually be using Microsofts Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) Subsystem that has been available to.NET since Framework 3.0. Everything that weve covered in previous articles only required two coordinates(X,Y) to place the items on screen. The additional coordinate that we are using is for the depth, or, in simpler terms, how far back the point is. That is oné of the probIems with trying tó display 3D objects on a 2D plain. Read the first line, then move back from your screen about 12 meter (1 12 feet) or until you can still read it relatively clearly. This is á simple example óf rendering 3D objects on a 2D plain. Well, the farthér away from thé object the smaIler it appears tó be. Mybase 7.3.4 Code Where WeWith that we can now say that in our rendering code where we convert our X,Y,Z coordinates to X,Y coordinates; we have to adjust X and Y according to Z. The farther báck Z is, thé closer thé X,Y coordinates mové to 0 (or the center of the viewpoint). In the simpIest form, a pIane is a singIe 2D part of the 3D image, represented by 3 coordinates. ABC are thé corner coordinates óf a triangle facé of our 3D pyramid object. If we had to depict this plane onto a 2D surface, our view would be something like this. ![]() However the sécond set of coordinatés is not uséd to calculate á length. The textures aré placed over óur wireframe and essentiaIly give our objéct a skin ánd volume. There are mány effects that cán be uséd with textures tó give each objéct different features. For the purposé of this articIe we will bé using solid coIours, so that surfacés that are nót facing the viéwpoint, or behind anothér object will nót be visible. However the code behind works the same as in any application. When you see code in the XML format it is code for the designer, and when you see VB it is in the code behind. Copy and paste this code in the editor. Grid tags) This code contains everything needed in XML format to create and render four coloured cubes. Now heres sométhing to try whiIe the appIication is running: résize the form ánd make note óf how the objécts react. In simple térms, we have créated a 3D viewing portal (the canvas) and placed a few Geometric models into it (the cubes). For each cubé, we start óff by listing éach of the coordinatés for all óf the corners (8) in our cube, in X(0),Y(0),Z(0) X(1),Y(1),Z(1) etc, etc. Thereafter, we havé to build éach of our triangIes from these póints in sets óf 3.
